Seat Pan

Feeling the itch to start fabbing something I decided to start with the seat pan.  Having something to sit on helps with positioning other components anyway.  Starting with a piece of cardboard I scribbled out the outline of my pan.

I plasma cut the outline from 10 gauge hot roll plate I had in my studio.  It’s pretty thick but that’s ok.  I cleaned up the outline using a belt sander.

Adding some shape and contour to this heavy plate was easy using my Flypress.  A Flypress (or Screw Press) uses the weight of the wheel and inertia to apply downward force.  The uses are vast and so is the amount of tooling you can make for these.

I am making this seat an air ride.  If you are curious the part number for the mini air bag is 1S3-013.  I intended to fab a cross brace to mount the air bag but as you can see in the pictures the perfect spot was the existing frame cross piece.

Using a hole saw I made a mounting plate for the air spring, drilled the frame, and welded the mounting nut in place.
